So the trick is now to keep this stable driver available to roll back to, in case a future updated driver introduces a new bug. The rendering though is very fast minutes on GPU compared to hours on CPU. Incidentally, since changing my card from an AMD7970 to Nvidia GTX1080, I have encountered no problems with GPU bugs. For those, you need as much VRAM and as many cores as possible. The final render is done on the CPU so the GPU card does not affect render times. It is a different story in some other 3D apps that can use the GPU cores for final render. The preview renders use the GPU but the load is not heavy for that so any of the above cards will work.
